In the summer of 1987. treasure hunter Tommy Thompson charmed 161 investors into funding his search for the SS Central America. a ship that sank in 1857 carrying several tons of gold. The next year. Tommy successfully recovered and sold nearly $50 million worth of gold from the ship. but he fled without paying back his investors or crew. and went missing for 27 years. In 2015 the fugitive was arrested. but claimed he was suffering from short-term memory loss and couldn’t recall where he hid the gold. He was imprisoned and held in contempt of court for his refusal to turn over the gold. and he remains in jail to this day.
