Why Shook?
The earth was shaking in 1906! There were three major earthquakes that year. the most devastating being the San Francisco earthquake. which is estimated to have been between a 7.7 and an 8.2 on the Richter Scale. But there were also large earthquakes in Guatemala and Chile. believed to have been 7.5 and 8.2. respectively. At the time. modern scientific methods for measuring earthquakes were just being developed. so many of the recorded magnitudes may have been less precise than they would be today. But the San Francisco Earthquake in particular was a turning point in the field of seismology. leading to a better understanding of the tectonic forces at play and the development of more accurate tools to predict and study earthquakes.
