Why Hazardous Waste of a Trip?
In 1987. a gar-barge loaded with 3.100 tons of Brooklyn garbage headed from New York to North Carolina. which had agreed to receive it and turn it into methane. Unfortunately. local officials turned the barge away due to a rumor that it contained several bags of contaminated hospital gowns and syringes. The barge spent months moving from port to port. traveling as far south as Belize. but no one agreed to take in the garbage. Eventually the gar-barge returned to Brooklyn. where the unwanted garbage was incinerated.
